  • S.C.R.-SIBELCO was founded in 1872 as a local Belgian silica sand operating company. It has been growing constantly into the present industrial minerals group, still producing basically silica sand and flour but also a series of other advanced minerals such as clays, kaolin, bentonite, feldspar, nepheline syenite, olivine etc. at over 225 production sites worldwide.
    The Belgian operation employs 300 people at 3 industrial sites producing 4 million Tons of silica products.
    Working in a country with a dense population and nature under permanent pressure is an extra motivation for Sibelco's considerable efforts to operate in a spirit of respect for the environment.

    The Silica and Moulding Sands Association (SAMSA) is the trade association for the producers of industrial silica sand in the UK. It is one of the constitutent bodies of the Quarry Products Association, the trade association for the aggregate, asphalt and ready-mixed concrete industries.

  • Aggregate Industries Ltd. is a leading producer of aggregate materials in the UK and the USA. Under the trade name of "GARSIDE SANDS" silica sand is dried and graded to various specifications to meet the demands of industry for high-grade specialist sand for a variety of end uses. Particular attention is paid to the grain shape, size distribution and the chemical analysis, in addition to other essential characteristics for certain applications. Garside sand has been quarried in the Leighton Buzzard area for 100 years and products have been supplied to virtually every corner of the world.

    BATHGATE SILICA SAND LTD

    Bathgate Silica Sand Ltd. produces industrial silica sand from its operation in Sandbach, Cheshire.
    The original quarry was opened in 1947 and has since been exhausted and a new quarry commenced operations in 1994. The company supplies products to the foundry, fibreglass and other industrial markets. It also supplies top dressings and root zones into the horticultural market.

    BUCBRICKS CO LTD

    Bucbricks Co Ltd. is a family owned company that was founded in 1947. From its operation in Essex it supplies many grades of industrial silica sand, including products for the water filtration and sports and leisure markets.

    BURYTHORPE SILICA SAND PRODUCTS LTD.

    Burythorpe Silica Sand Products Ltd. was formed at the start of 2003 as a management buyout of the Schenectady operation in North Yorkshire. Sand is produced for ceramic, construction and sports and leisure markets and for the production of resin coated sand for foundry applications.

    John Williams (Cinetic Sand) Ltd. is a family business that commenced operations in 1928 and produces naturally bonded sand in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire for the foundry and horticultural industries. The company also produces washed material for the building industry.

    As part of the RMC Group, the world's largest supplier of ready mixed concrete and Europe's leading aggregate producer, RMC Aggregates operates 125 quarries in England, Scotland and Wales. The product range is extensive and a wide variety of mainstream and niche markets are served, the latter including the foundry, water, power and horticultural sectors. The company's principal source of silica sands is in Kent.

    Tarmac is a major supplier and processor of minerals and materials for a variety of industrial applications. In addition to being a leading supplier of silica sand to the foundry, sports and leisure, glass and manufacturing industries generally, Tarmac also operates a significant business importing, handling, processing and distributing other minerals including feldspar, dolomite and perlite. Finally, Tarmac has a manufacturing business specialising in the further processing of industrial minerals for the foundry, refractory, heavy clay and metallurgical industries.

    WBB MINERALS, a member of the Sibelco Group, unites two companies, Watts Blake Bearne & Co. PLC and Sibelco Minerals and Chemicals, both of whom have considerable minerals resources. Their high-quality products include refined ball clays, silica sand, silica and cristobalite flours, plastic clays, kaolins, prepared clay bodies, resin coated sand, industrial resin, dolomite and a wide range of speciality products, which service the glass, foundry, ceramic and construction industries.

    MI-France groups together the following companies:

    The company CERF was founded in 1825.
    Its first activity was in the lime sector until 1955. From a craft structure in the fifties, the company has reached a regional dimension in Auvergne in all its activities.

    The company deals with four industrial sectors:
    - aggregates
    - ready-mixed concrete
    - transport
    - mobile crushing.

    The company CERF mines different deposits for industry, notably the Quartzites of Meillers (03210) for silica.

    The Denain-Anzin Minéraux Group activity lies in the extraction and valorisation of mineral raw materials: feldspar, quartz, mica, kaolin and Grès de Thivier. The products concern especially the ceramic industry, the electro metallurgical, and mineral fillers.
    DAM extracts quartz pebbles of high purity from its deposits of Boudeau (Périgueux, France), "Quartz Pierre Blanche" (Clermont-Ferrand, France), "Euroquartzo" (Portugal).
    DAM has become one of the three main European producers of silicon / electrometallurgic quartz.
    The group asserts every day its presence on the key European markets in all its activities. The geological competence, the mastery of the resources, the quality controls and the environmental requirements assure to the group a high-level selective production.

    SAMIN S.A.

    The company SAMIN S.A., a 100% subsidiary of the SAINT GOBAIN group, is specialised in the extraction and the sale of mineral raw materials such as silica sand, dolomite, limestone and phonolite. Moreover, SAMIN has been involved in glass cullet processing since 1982.

    SIFRACO

    Founded in 1958, Sifraco is a company of the Sibelco Group, worlwide leader in the production of silica sand.
    Sifraco's activities are:
    - Silica sand and silica flour: 11 plants and quarries throughout France. Production of approximately 4 million tons a year, mainly for foundry, glass industry and any other industrial uses.
    - Glass recycling: Palé SAS, fully owned by Sifraco. 4 plants in France; production of 0,7 million tons a year of cullet for glass.
    - Pebbles: Delarue Trading SAS, fully owned by Sifraco. 1 plant; production of 60 000 tons a year, grinding media for ceramics.
    - Research: Premis Technologies, fully owned by Sifraco. Dedicated to Research & Development; pilot plant with plasma units.

    The company SILMER is based in Cayeux-Sur-Mer, Somme, France. It has been specialised for more than 60 years in the calcination and crushing of beach pebbles. Its production of cristobalite silica reaches 15,000 tons/year, mainly for the ceramics, road marking, wall surfacing and paint applications, while 50,000 tons/year of white or pink siliceous aggregates are produced for the road enlightment, road signalling, white architectural beton, and decorative markets.

    The company, owned by the Sibelco Group, was founded in 1969 and is one of the most important silica producers in the Netherlands with production figures of around 500 000 tons a year. Sigrano extracts and processes quartz sand and flour. These raw materials are used by various markets such as glass, foundry, ceramic and building industries. The company has 2 production sites in the Netherlands: one in Maastricht and the other in Heerlen.

    LIEBEN MINERALS B. V. is a full daughter company of Sigrano.

    The Bundesverband Baustoffe - Steine und Erden (BBS, German Building Materials Association) represents the German producers of building materials mainly based on mineral raw materials. The members are 24 sector-associations representing ca. 6500 companies and a total turnover of € 25000 Million. AKQ is the Working Group Quartz of the BBS.

    Sibelco Italia S.p.A. is a company belonging to the multinational Belgian SIBELCO group. The company was founded in 1999 as the result of the merger of the two most important companies on the Italian market for the glass, ceramics and foundry sands: SIRO S.p.A. and SIBELCO-SASIFO S.p.A.

    ASKANIA AB manufactures and markets industrial sand, minerals and chemicals, waterglass and products for purification of water, air and gas, along with a variety of other raw materials.
    Its customers are first and foremost to be found among foundries, steel and metal works, the glass and ceramics industries, the paint and plastic industries, the building materials industry, companies engaged in sand and grit blasting, the food industry, and the water, air and gas purification areas.
    Since 1992, Askania is part of the Belgian industrial minerals group S.C.R.-Sibelco. The company traces its roots back to the day when in the late 1800s, Axel H Agren founded in Gothenburg what was in due course to become the modern company of today. At first, Askania limited itself to the import of chemicals, but the range was later extended to include metals and foundry products. From the 1930s onwards Askania has had its own production facilities.
    Today, Askania is a leading supplier of raw materials to the industry in the Nordic countries.     Founded in 1954, Brogardsand AB produces silica, feldspar, sand and gravel in several fractions for industrial use. The main branches are: foundries, insulation, building industries, water purification, leisure as golf courses, beachvolley, playgrounds, etc. The main markets are the northern countries: Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark. Special sand is also delivered for export outside EU. The company's production capacity is of 200 000 - 250 000 tons a year. Brogardsand AB has a daughter company named Fyleverken IMB AB (website: www.fyleverken.com) founded in 1938 which produces silica sand and silica flour. Fyleverken IMB AB also produces dry mixings. The company's production capacity is of 40 000 - 50 000 tons a year.

    IBERSIL is the trade association representing the producers of industrial silica in Spain & Portugal. IBERSIL was created in March 2000. The membership currently comprises the following 7 companies:

    CAOBAR was founded in 1965. Its headquarters are based in Guadalajara. 100 000 tons of quartz and 228 000 tons of silica sand are produced yearly. In addition to quartz and silica sand, the company also produces kaolin and feldspar. The company's main markets are the ceramics, glass fibres, paper, and rubber industries.

    The Company was founded in 1976, it is based in Valencia and is part of the Group Pilato. Its main products are colemanites, ulexite, zirconium, silica, chromite, pyrolusite, sodium and potassium feldspar for a total production of 400 000 tons a year. The company's customers are to be found in the ceramics, welding electrodes, glass, refractory, and foundry industries.

    IMERYS TILES MINERALS ESPANA S.A.'s business is the grinding of raw materials. The company belongs to the French Group IMERYS. It was founded as Molturaciones Castellon S.A. (MOLCASA) in 1989 and is located in an industrial area in Onda (Castellón, Spain). The company hires 25 people and uses 5 grinders with different capacities, its annual production is of about 135 000 tons. More than 3 million tons of silica sand are commercialised every year. The Company's main customers are the glass, foundry, filtration and silicates industries.

    SIBELCO PORTUGUESA, Lda

    The company was founded in September 1973, it is part of the Group S.C.R.-SIBELCO. 600 000 tonnes of sands, moltured silica and kaolins are produced every year in three production sites: Rio Maior, Alenquer and Figueira Foz. The headquarters are located in Rio Maior. The company mainly delivers its products to the glass, ceramics, foundry, and cement industries.
